Adobe InDesign CS4 Server

Features

Because Adobe® InDesign® CS4 Server software shares its code base with the rest of the InDesign family of products, it always inherits the latest features of the desktop version of the application. In addition, it offers a number of capabilities specifically designed for server-based applications.

Features for InDesign Server developers

InDesign Markup Language (IDML)

Use IDML, an XML-based file format, to programmatically assemble and disassemble InDesign documents using standard XML tools without having to open INDD files. Once an IDML file is created, publishing solutions use InDesign CS4 Server to produce the finished output. Learn more about IDML

Windows 64-bit support

Achieve performance improvements through support for Windows® 64-bit systems.

Performance monitoring

Flexible development environment

Develop your solution in a familiar environment, thanks to support for Mac and Windows platforms as well as a wide variety of programming languages, including C++, C#, AppleScript, VBScript, JavaScript, SOAP, and .NET.

IPv6 support

Features inherited from InDesign CS4

Support for the latest Adobe native file formats

Import content in a wide variety of formats, including PSD, AI, Adobe PDF, XML, BMP, DCS, EPS, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, RTF, TXT, linked and placed INDD files, and Microsoft Word and Excel files.

Enhanced PDF creation

Take advantage of full support for PDF/X-4 as well as the latest version of PDF. InDesign CS4 Server now offers new functionality, including the ability to reduce file size by storing only a single instance of an image on a master page if it appears on many pages in a document. Variable Data Publishing (VDP) solutions can also produce PDF files directly from the InDesign data merge function, without requiring any intermediate steps.

Interactive document design

Expand your creative output horizons with support for new InDesign CS4 interactive features, such as buttons, hyperlinks, and page transitions in PDF and SWF.

SWF and XFL export

Transform page layouts to SWF format and add a rich assortment of buttons, hyperlinks, and transitional animations. XFL export enables developers to describe, create, and modify an XML representation of an InDesign file that can be opened in Adobe Flash® CS4 Professional software. Then, use the Flash authoring environment to add video, audio, animation, and complex interactivity.

XML rules for business logic

Build pages automatically using incoming XML data and a set of preset rules. Define templates, business logic, and formatting guidelines that combine with XML to dynamically build custom page layouts. Easily build rule sets using standard scripting languages such as JavaScript, AppleScript, and VBScript.

Conditional text

Take advantage of a new and more efficient way to deliver variations of the same document for different users and channels, such as technical manuals, educational text books with student and teacher editions, and documents that must be localized into multiple languages. Turn off conditions to hide content, and the remaining text and anchored objects automatically reflow in your layout.

Cross-referencing

Easily create a dynamic link to another section in a document or to a section of text in an external document. Cross-references can then be automatically updated for rapid production and improved accuracy in longer documents.

Improved preflighting

Create your own rules according to the unique needs of your customers or solution. InDesign Server offers new extensible preflighting capabilities, including verification of color spaces, image resolution, and overset text.

Extended language support

Take advantage of Roman line breaks for Japanese hyphenation and Chinese indexing support.
